Intel 3D-printed robot available later this year

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">At the Code Conference in California this week, Intel revealed that its 3D-printed Jimmy Research Robot, which debuted at Maker Faire NYC last year, will be available through its 21st Century Robot Project later this year. Users will be able to download the files required for printing.</span></div>

The scheme is the brainchild of Intel futurist Brian David Johnson and has been brought to fruition in collaboration with developers from the University of Southern California, Olin College and Trossen Robotics.</span></div>

It has an modular aluminum exoskeleton that can expanded and tweaked. It is powered by an an Intel NUC D54250WYK mini PC with a Core i5-4250U 4th Generation Haswell chipset, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 32 GB SSD.</span></div>

Jimmy also features USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI/Display Port video output, an Ethernet connection, SATA port, 2x mini-PCIe slots and up to 8-channel audio.</span></div>

One could argue that this is a touch misleading, although in isolation it's not a big deal (a website showing data about how your herbs are doing could be quite fun though).</span></div>

It talks of "sensors and software" that "measure the conditions and make sure your plant is feeling well," and references the "high tech" that is involved in the device. I was surprised, therefore, to discover that none of the above really held true.</span></div>

The light is on a timer, but that's about the most technological aspect of the device itself. The specially formulated soil in the herb cartridges, meanwhile, is the most sophisticated aspect of the whole thing, which Click and Grow rightly makes a point of noting.</span></div>

Why it's mentioned on the Smart Herb Garden page, therefore, I don't know.</span></div>

It does what's expected of it and grows great herbs, as you can see from our lead image. As per the guidance provided, it took about six weeks for each of the herb plants to get to a good size, growing especially rapidly between the fourth and sixth weeks. The plants clearly responded to the light too, which I'm sure helps things along significantly. There are also a variety of refill cartridges to choose from.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">However, Movpak boasts a significant benefit over the previous efforts in that this skateboard-like device has electric drive and can speed along at up to 15 mph (24 km/h) for up to 9 miles (14 km) before needing a recharge – which itself takes a couple of hours. Movpak measures 60 x 30 cm (24 x 12 in), weighs 7.7 kg (17 lb), and can also be pulled along like a luggage trolley. When in operation, the Movpak is steered like a skateboard (with the backpack sitting to the rear) and acceleration is controlled with a wireless controller that the company is still refining.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">If you want to sample a color that you encounter in the real world and then reproduce it on your computer, you might already be interested in devices like the SwatchMate Cube or the NODE Chroma module. Sometimes, though, you might just want to do some freehand pen-and-ink drawing using such "captured colors." That's just what Scribble's upcoming Ink color picker pen is designed to let you do.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Scribble Ink has (or <em>will</em> have) a 16-bit RGB color sensor on one end, that is held up to the leaf, brick, person's face, or whatever it is that you like the color of. An integrated ARM 9 microprocessor subsequently analyzes the color and stores it. When you later want to draw or write in that color, the pen reproduces it by mixing ink from its cyan, magenta, yellow, white and/or black refillable cartridges.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">It's reportedly possible to reproduce over 16 million colors, 100,000 of which can be stored on the Ink's 1GB of memory at one time. If you want to use and/or manage those colors on your smartphone or computer, the device also has a Micro USB port and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.</span></div>

Its specs are much the same as those of the Ink, although instead of ink cartridges and a writing tip, it will feature a capacitive rubber tip.
