A rabbit's beating heart has been regulated using a tiny pacemaker that beams in energy from outside its body. It is the first time this kind of wireless energy transfer has been demonstrated in a living animal. If such wirelessly powered medical implants can work in people too, it would reduce the seriousness of the procedures required to get them fitted.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Being fitted with a pacemaker currently requires surgery plus another operation when the battery eventually runs down. So Poon and her colleagues outfitted a rabbit with a pacemaker that has no battery and is just 3 millimetres long (see picture, above right). A metal plate, powered only by a cellphone battery, was then held a couple of centimetres above the rabbit's chest.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The plate transmitted 2000 microwatts to the pacemaker via electromagnetic waves. The pacemaker was then able to regulate the rabbit's heartbeat, and delivered safe levels of energy to the surrounding tissue.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Such "near-field energy transmission" was previously considered too weak to power devices that are small or placed deeply in the body. To get around this problem, Poon's team designed the plate to emit electromagnetic radiation in a directed beam towards the implant. They also used the rabbit's own body tissue to help deliver the signal: the radiation is of a high frequency that propagates particularly well in animal tissue, allowing it to pass further into the body without losing much energy into the tissue or causing damage.</span></div>

He says that when the Stanford team first shared their unusual power scheme, many in the field were surprised. Because of the high frequencies involved, no one had thought to try this method.</span></div>

The team is now launching a company, Vivonda Medical, to adapt the technology for use in humans. That will include more practical alternatives to the metal plate, perhaps delivering energy via a patch on the skin.</span></div>

The device registers the heat signature left by a person's finger when they touch a surface, and then uses augmented reality software to add new interesting, context-sensitive functions that allow users to interact with their environment in new ways and in real time.</span></div>

This could open up even more ways of interacting with the environment (and which are likely to look even more bizarre to an outside observer).</span></div>

Technology can go a long way towards keeping food fresher for longer, but it can also be used to check whether the food has passed its best-by date. We've seen plastics that indicate the freshness of food, and we've also covered food packaging that lets people know if it's still fresh. Now, a product called Peres aims to perform a similar task, but it does it with a sensor and a smartphone or tablet.</div>

The Peres device is held by the user, over his or her food. Four sensors are included that monitor temperature, humidity, ammonia and volatile organic compounds in the air around the food, and that information is fed back to the user's smartphone via Bluetooth. Florida-based start-up Marbel is the latest to set its wheels in motion, this week launching a crowdfunding campaign for what it claims to be the world's lightest electric vehicle – the 9.9 lb (4.5 kg) Marbel.</span></div>

The 165 Wh lithium battery powers a 2,000 W (2.68 hp) brushless DC motor for a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h), both of which are sealed for protection on the bottom side of the deck. The battery can be fully charged in 90 minutes, which according to Marbel should be good for a range of 10 mile (16 km). This puts it well ahead of the Boosted Board's range of 6 mi (9.6 km), but short of Yuneec's E-Go Cruiser at 18 mi (30 km). This was necessary, Belcher claims, to maintain the weight of the board.</span></div>

"Hollow fiber membranes will be installed on the inside to do the filtration function. The kidney will then be sealed together using the threads and sealing o-rings. A fluid called dialysate will be circulated on the outside of the membranes, inside of the shell, to remove waste material from the blood and keep useful material from leaving the blood. A waste stream maintains the person's ability to urinate. The outside of the shell can be used as a substrate for growth of biological material for ease of integration into the body."</span></div>

Since then, a 3D model of the finished version (right) has been released, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Physicists have for long wondered about the possibilities of creating matter from light and this development brings us a lot closer.</div>

The experiment is yet to be done, but it has passed peer review as practical and the inventors are in discussions with experimentalists about the equipment to carry it out. These are exciting times because it has been accepted for 80 years that two photons of light could theoretically create matter, but there has never been demonstrable evidence yet.</div>

Even if this theory was universally accepted by physicists to be true, when Breit and Wheeler first proposed it, they said that they never expected it to be shown in the laboratory. The scientific evolution of today makes it easier to prove the theory now.</div>

The proposal is fairly simple in scientific terms. Professor Steve Rose and his Phd student Oliver Pike have designed the model on which the tests can be done. Their paper in <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Nature Photonics</em> proposes a two-step process. High intensity lasers would be used to push electrons until they are traveling close to the speed of light, directing them towards a slab of gold. The scientists then would fire a high-energy laser at the inner surface of this gold can called hohlraum, to create a thermal radiation field, generating light similar to the light emitted by stars.</div>

They would then direct the photon beam from the first stage of the experiment through the centre of the can, causing the photons from the two sources to collide and form electrons and positrons. Years went by and I did paragliding. I made this little bar with two engines and it worked…So, then I thought let’s make something that you can control the power on. It’s just me – I’m not some big company. I spoke with a patent attorney, and we put some drawings together…It’s still patent pending. I tried it on water quite a while ago using a small bar, but there wasn’t enough power. This is the first time it’s been done on a lake with an expert.’</span></div>

Currently, the developers are using several battery packs for the testing phase of the device.  The hand held engine is also quite heavy for users, but Dr Contoret noted that he expects technology to have improved so much in five years that the device will be approximately half the weight, but double the power.</span></div>

While skepticism surely is understandable, FaiKee has been known to leak such announcements way before Microsoft releases the official word. Perhaps this time, FaiKee is right once again. Although, whether it’s 02-03 or Q2-Q3, there’s still quite a long wait for Windows 9, to be sure. There are many other analysts and speculators who have made their own predictions as to when the next version of the operating system will be released, and they vary. The only common thing: it will be in 2015.</div>

Perhaps the one thing still missing is the electric superbike, the performance king of excess that will prove to petrolheads once and for all that the biggest, fastest, meanest bikes on the road won't be burning dinosaur bones in ten years' time.</div>

And here it is. The Lightning LS-218 is due to launch this summer in the USA, and it promises to be the fastest production bike on the planet.</div>

After a runaway 20-second victory at Pike's Peak last year, Lightning gave the world a sneak peek at its production superbike over the weekend at the Quail Motorsport Gathering in Carmel, California.</div>

While these photos just show a hollow shell of the superbike with no battery fitted, Lightning has also released some truly eye-popping specs to go along with it.</div>

For starters, the 218 in the model name refers to the bike's tested top speed – a ridiculous 218 miles per hour, or around 350 km/h. Lightning believes it'll go faster. Either way, it already holds the world record for the fastest production motorcycle.</div>

To get there, it makes a liquid-cooled 200 horsepower (150 kW), which sits right at the pointy end with the latest hypersport machines in the market. But this is a false equivalence, as the Lightning also belts out a truly mammoth 168 lb.ft (228 Nm) of torque, nearly twice what the <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/ducati-1199-panigale-review/20587/" style="background-color: transparent; color: #1e8dd7; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Ducati Panigale</a> manages. The feeling of acceleration on this machine will be absolutely effortless, and it will flip your brain inside out. This is excess in its purest form.</div>

The LS-218 doesn't use a clutch or transmission, it's a direct drive system. You can think of it as the world's fastest twist-n-go, so presumably in lower power modes it will be ridiculously easy to ride, when you're not out setting land speed records on the weekend.</div>

Different battery pack options will be available depending on your budget, from 12 kWh up to the big daddy 20 kWh pack that boasts a maximum range of around 180 miles (290km), and lightning is claiming it'll take 30 minutes to top up on a quick charger. Getting from 0-100 percent will doubtless take a long, long time on a standard wall socket.</div>

Wet weight ready to roll is 495 lbs (224.5 kg), and the running gear is all absolutely top-notch, with Öhlins FGRT forks and TTX shock, magnesium Marchesini wheels and radial Brembo front brakes.</div>

Customer bikes can be upgraded with more than just battery pack options. The frame and swingarm can be swapped out for carbon fiber units to save weight and unsprung mass, the dash can be swapped out for a fully programmable Android touch screen, the seat unit can be customized and the bike's <a href="http://www.glynnkerr.com/" style="background-color: transparent; color: #1e8dd7; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Glyn Kerr</a>-designed looks can be totally overhauled using a custom graphics wrap.</div>

This is an important motorcycle, because it's really going to be the first electric on the market that goes too fast, accelerates too hard, and reduces most riders to trembling lumps of jelly – all the things that make street superbikes so alluring and awe-inspiring. Just look at Motorcycle.com's very quick <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nztLjEs_2Kw" style="background-color: transparent; color: #1e8dd7; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">test ride of the 2012 prototype</a>. The poor guy, a professional bike tester, spends three solid minutes just howling and jabbering in fear and exhilaration.</div>
