Mealspec flameless cooker can boil water and cook real food

Flameless ration heaters have been used to heat US military MRE rations for decades. More recently, they've been gaining popularity in the outdoor consumer market. These heaters use chemical-based heating as a quick, simple, portable solution for cooking prepackaged meals. The new Mealspec Heater bag jolts this style of cooking system to life with enough heat to boil an egg and cook raw fish.</div>

The typical flameless ration heater has enough power to heat a pre-cooked "meal ready to eat" (MRE) 100 degrees over the ambient temperature within 10 minutes. Typical heaters, such as the <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/trekmates-flameless-stove/23366/" style="background-color: transparent; color: #1e8dd7; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Trekmates</a> flameless outdoor cooker, quit rising in cooking temperature well before they reach 200º F (93º C). These flameless heaters are effective at their objective of heating up MREs, but they're not meant to do any actual cooking.</div>

A spec comparison with other available systems shows that it's not exaggerating, assuming the bag works as well as advertised.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">After Mealspec's heating packet has been placed in the bag and water added, the ensuing chemical reaction heats the water just above the boiling point to 220º F (104º C) in just 12 seconds, cooking at above 180º F (82º C) for 12 minutes. Not only can that heat a prepackaged meal, it can do light cooking, including hard-boiling an egg and cooking fish filets. Cooking times will vary based on what's being prepared. Mealspec warns that the leftover water cannot be used for drinking and food needs to be stored in its own container when cooking in the Heater bag.</span></div>

Scribble Ink lets users draw with colors that they find around them

Sometimes, though, you might just want to do some freehand pen-and-ink drawing using such "captured colors." That's just what Scribble's upcoming Ink color picker pen is designed to let you do.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Scribble Ink has (or <em>will</em> have) a 16-bit RGB color sensor on one end, that is held up to the leaf, brick, person's face, or whatever it is that you like the color of. An integrated ARM 9 microprocessor subsequently analyzes the color and stores it. When you later want to draw or write in that color, the pen reproduces it by mixing ink from its cyan, magenta, yellow, white and/or black refillable cartridges.</span></div>

LG announces flagship G3 smartphone with Quad HD display

The flagship device features top tier specs including an impressive Quad HD display, that should help it compete with top Android handsets like Samsung’s </span>Galaxy S5<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22px;"> and HTC’s </span>One (M8)<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 22px;">. Despite its branding as a “simple” device, the G3 holds some very impressive specs.</span></span><br />

The handset features a choice of 16 or 32 GB internal storage, as well as a microSD slot for expandability. There's also a 1W speaker with Boost AMP on board, and the phone iswireless charging compatible.</span></div>

The large handset is kept running by a 3,000 mAh battery. The device measures 8.9mm (0.35-in) thick and weighs in at 149g (0.33lb). The device includes back-facing buttons similar to those we saw in 2013's G2, and exhibits an understated design with a curved back and no side buttons.</span></div>

There’s a smart keyboard that learns user typing habits, reportedly reducing errors by up to 75 percent over time, and a Smart Notice feature that provides suggestions to the user based on how they use their device. For example, the feature will notify users of unused files or apps, asking whether they should be deleted. Smart Notice is also able to make contextual suggestions, such as commenting that the user should take an umbrella out with them after it checks the weather.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Dubai Police Smart Services Department is testing the wearable tech to see just how practical it could be for traffic enforcement, <a href="http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/general/dubai-police-to-use-google-glass-1.1335784" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank" title="Gulf News">Gulf News reports</a>.  General director of the Smart Services Department, Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi has showed off two unique applications his team has created for its police officers; “One will allow them to take photos of traffic violations from the Glass, which will go instantly into our system, and the other application helps identify wanted cars.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">To record an image with the device all you need to do is tap the side of the headset. Photos that are taken by officers will be sent to the system immediately, coupled with the time, location and date that the image was taken. If this technology is to be used to check for wanted or stolen vehicles, all an officer has to do is simply look at the license plate while wearing Google Glass. The tech will then cross-check the number plate with the list of vehicles in the traffic department’s database and then the officer will be alerted if the vehicle is listed as stolen.</span></div>
