Divers already have the option of replacing their two regular swim fins with one fluke-like flexible rubber monofin, although aerospace engineer Ron Smith claims that his invention is much more effective. Known as the DOL-Fin, it incorporates a wide rigid hydrofoil-type fin.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">There are actually several models of "Dynamic Oscillating Lateral"-Fin, designed for different applications (such as freediving or recreational scuba diving) and levels of performance. In all cases, however, the feet are held firmly in place using either straps built into a foot platform, or attached Shimano cycling shoes.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">An elastomer/nylon composite suspension frame connects the fin to the feet, allowing the fin to pitch up and down in the same way that a dolphin's flukes change pitch as it swims. The fin itself is made from rigid aluminum, although most models also have swept-back flexible rubber tips.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The exact physics by which the DOL-Fin is claimed to work are pretty complex, but the basic idea is that the rigidity of the fin and the foot attachment setup minimize wasted energy, while the fin's ability to pitch keeps it from "stalling out" as it arcs through the water. Additionally, the fin's wide design gives it a larger effective surface area than old-school monofins, plus its hydrofoil design is simply more hydrodynamic.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Although some versions of the DOL-Fin have been around for a few years now, Smith is currently putting the finishing touches on his Orca Mk2 model. It sports a streamlined design, along with some other features aimed at competitive freediving.</span></div>

"It is made from incompressible materials (no foam), so the fin's buoyancy and swimming characteristics do not change with depth. It has adjustable foot straps that easily allow it to adapt between warm and cold water diving, eliminating the need for multiple monofins for different conditions. It has a modular design that is lightweight and easily packed into standard luggage for traveling."</span></div>

Designer Ted Ciamillo also hand-builds a monofin known as the <a href="http://caw-designs.com/?page_id=460" style="background-color: transparent; color: #1e8dd7; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Lunocet</a> (pictured above), which works on much the same principle as the DOL-Fin. The fin itself looks more like a dolphin's flukes, though, as opposed to a hydrofoil. Pricing for it starts at US$299, which doesn't include the required cycling shoes.</span></div>

That might seem plenty good enough given the average human eye is unable to differentiate between the individual pixels, but scientists in the UK have now developed technology that could lead to extremely high-resolution displays that put such pixel densities to shame.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Led by Oxford University scientists, a research team has created a prototype device that features pixels just 30 x 30 nanometers in size. The high resolution potential of the technology was discovered while the team was exploring the link between the electrical and optical properties of phase change materials (PCMs) that can switch from an amorphous to a crystalline state.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">By sandwiching a seven-nanometer thick layer of the PCM Germanium-Antimony-Tellurium (Ge2Sb2Te5 or GST) between two layers of transparent electrodes made of indium tin oxide (ITO), the scientists discovered they could "draw" still images within the sandwich "stack" using an atomic force microscope. They then found that the "nano-pixels" could be switched on and off electronically, creating colored dots that could be used as the basis for an extremely high-resolution display.</span></div>

"We were exploring the relationship between the electrical and optical properties of phase change materials and then had the idea of creating this GST 'sandwich' made up of layers just a few nanometers thick. We found that not only were we able to create images in the stack but, to our surprise, thinner layers of GST actually gave us better contrast. We also discovered that altering the size of the bottom electrode layer enabled us to change the color of the image."</span></div>

The layers that make up the GST sandwich are created using a sputtering technique, which would allow them to be deposited as thin films on extremely thin and flexible substrates.</span></div>

"This makes them potentially useful for 'smart' glasses, foldable screens, windshield displays, and even synthetic retinas that mimic the abilities of photoreceptor cells in the human eye."</span></div>

This means that only those pixels that actually change would need to be refreshed, significantly lowering energy consumption.</span></div>

Amongst the wide variety of potential applications, the team highlights the technology's benefits for use in smart glasses, where the nano-pixels would allow even images projected at a larger size would offer very high resolution.</span></div>

"But no one before thought of combining their electrical and optical functionality to provide entirely new kinds of non-volatile, high-resolution, electronic color displays – so our work is a real breakthrough."</span></div>

Dunn and Hillam's Desert House was designed to withstand the extreme desert conditions while remaining energy efficient. The AIA cited the project's "genuine sensibility to environmental management in this specific climate."</span></div>

The clients requested that the house engage with the surrounding landscape, that it provide multiple places to be use depending on the time of day and weather, and that it minimize energy usage.</span></div>

The fly-roof sits 600 mm (24 in) above the insulated roof, creating a pocket of warm air during the day. This creates a "thermal draw," helping to pull cool air up from the rock below into the enclosed central courtyard and creating the house's own micro-climate. The cool air can then be drawn into the building through low windows around the courtyard.</span></div>

The glove uses a Bluetooth 4.0 LE module in its wrist, sensors in each fingertip and a magnet in the thumb to wirelessly control your phone. Each finger offers single and double-tap actions to control the phone's music. You can play, pause, skip forward, and backtrack through music; control volume; and activate Siri.</span></div>

With transmittance of 30 percent, the company says the panel is superior to existing transparent LCD panels that generally achieve around 10 percent transmittance (although rival Samsung unveiled a transparent color LCD panel in 2011 boasting transmittance of over 15 percent). LG Display claims to have also reduced the haze of the panel, caused by circuit devices and film components, to just 2 percent.</span></div>
