Case in point – <strong>Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, just set a new broadband speed record of 10 gigabits per second</strong> using traditional copper telephone lines combined with a prototype technology that’s intended to show how existing copper access networks can be used to deliver 1Gbps symmetrical ultra-broadband access services.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The prototype technology is called XG-FAST and is an extension of G.fast technology, a new broadband standard currently being finalized by the ITU. G.fast, which is expected to be commercially available in 2015, uses a frequency of 106MHz to deliver broadband speeds of up to 500Mbps over a distance of 100 meters.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">By comparison, XG-FAST uses an increased frequency range of up to 500MHz to achieve faster speeds, albeit over shorter distances. Using XG-FAST technology, Bell Labs was able to hit 1Gbps symmetrical over 70 meters on a single copper pair, and 10Gbps over 30 meters using two pairs of lines (bonding).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">“Our constant aim is to push the limits of what is possible to ‘invent the future’, with breakthroughs that are 10 times better than are possible today,” explains Marcus Weldon, President of Bell Labs. “Our demonstration of 10Gbps over copper is a prime example: by pushing broadband technology to its limits, operators can determine how they could deliver gigabit services over their existing networks, ensuring the availability of ultra-broadband access as widely and as economically as possible.”</span></div>

Quality of wire, crosstalk, and other factors can all affect real-world results. Nevertheless, it’s pretty exciting that 10Gbps speeds are visible in the distance.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The thick, soupy atmosphere of Earth is great for breathing, but not so much for seeing what’s going on in the cosmos. That’s why the most spectacular and scientifically important images of the universe have been taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It has served the world well for more than 20 years, but Hubble is nearing the end of its useful life, and the James Webb telescope is still years away from completion. In the meantime, NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have just completed the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) — a giant telescope that rides on the back of a high-altitude jumbo jet. It’s really the next best thing to being in space.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">NASA has been working on the SOFIA project for a number of years, but only recently has the flying observatory been declared fully operational. Sadly, it’s not as simple as strapping a telescope to a standard jet and heading for the skies. The plane itself, a Boeing 747SP, is highly specialized. This craft was designed by Boeing to be able to fly higher, faster, and longer than a standard 747, which is perfect for SOFIA. The frame of the aircraft has been modified to be considerably lighter, but the most obvious change is the addition of a large door toward the aft where the 2.5-meter telescope peeks out.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The unique design of this aircraft allows it to remain in the stratosphere (at about 45,000 feet, 13,000 meters) for several hours making observations. At that altitude, most of the atmospheric distortion ground telescopes contend with <a href="http://www.geek.com/science/nasas-sofia-telescope-lives-in-a-jumbo-jet-at-45000-ft-1598833/" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">is a non-issue</a>, and it can fly to any part of the globe to observe different parts of the sky. One advantage SOFIA has over space-based telescopes is that it lands at the end of each mission, which makes it considerably easier to repair and outfit for particular tasks. A telescope like Hubble needs to be almost entirely automated and servicing it is a <em>bit </em>more involved.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">SOFIA’s telescope works with nine interchangeable instruments that allow it to do astronomy in the infrared and visible spectrum. However, only one instrument can be attached at a time. That’s not a huge problem as NASA plans more than 100 flights per year. The telescope also has a system of gyroscopes and pressurized oil bearings to cope with vibration from turbulence and the engines. Using these packages, SOFIA is capable of investigating many of the same things as space telescopes including exoplanet study, comet composition, and stellar evolution. The newly completed GREAT spectrometer will be perfect for peering deep into distant planetary nebulae.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">While operating SOFIA is cheap compared to launching a space telescope, the yearly costs are still more than $80 million. NASA has worried publicly that unless the DLR contributes more funding to the program, it might have to be grounded in a few years. The space agency is working to convince Congress to authorize additional funding in 2015 for the SOFIA program. Until it knows for sure, NASA will continue flying SOFIA missions and studying the universe at 600 miles per hour.</span></div>

Dutch artist Diemut Strebe has grown a living replica of the ear that Vincent Van Gogh reportedly sliced off in a troubled episode, using genetic material from one of Van Gogh's direct descendants. With a lifespan of 80 years or more, the ear could live as long as any one of us, says Strebe, who is investigating the idea of replicating people from historical DNA.</div>

"The ear is grown with Lieuwe van Gogh's cells," Strebe tells Gizmag. "By his natural relationship to Vincent, he carries in his cells the white chromosomes of Vincent and a 16th of his genome."</div>

Strebe figured out the shape of the ear by looking at a historical photo of the artist, and extrapolated the measurements to create a 3D-printed mold that approximated its shape. A scaffold placed in the mold was seeded with Van Gogh's cells, which grew until the ear reached its final form. The result, states Strebe, is a true living piece.</div>

"It has a metabolism," Strebe tells us. "It lives in a container, in a system which mimics our body. It has a lung, it has a heart, it has plasma and it even has oxygen exchange."</div>

To make a system that supported the ear, she built a bioreactor that mimics the body's different parts. According to Strebe, the ear could live to be really old if it's well taken care of and given proper nutrition. To genetically engineer the ear to be as close to Vincen't Van Gogh's as possible, she collaborated with scientists at Harvard and MIT as part of a project called "Sugababe." Along with some of Van Gogh's genetic material, the ear is also made up of some genetically engineered components.</div>

While she initially hoped to use Van Gogh's own DNA to grow the ear, that plan fell apart when donated letters that supposedly belonged to the artist (which took a year for her to source) were found to lack any trace of his DNA. Strebe next approached Lieuwe van Gogh, the great-great-grandson of Vincent's brother Theo Gogh, who readily donated a bit of his skin for the project. Strebe, who is currently trying to source other historical DNA to experiment with, says that the project brings up many interesting questions about human replication.</div>

"Theoretically a historical person could be genetically created," Strebe tells us." There are many interesting questions involved about uniqueness, about the possibility to reconstruct somebody physically or how identical the result would be even if you get to that point. The questions involved are similar to those when Plutarch talked about the Ship of Thesus – whether a ship would be the same ship if all its parts were replaced?".</div>

In all cases, however, the feet are held firmly in place using either straps built into a foot platform, or attached Shimano cycling shoes.</span></div>

Additionally, the fin's wide design gives it a larger effective surface area than old-school monofins, plus its hydrofoil design is simply more hydrodynamic.</span></div>

It sports a streamlined design, along with some other features aimed at competitive freediving.</span></div>

"It is made from incompressible materials (no foam), so the fin's buoyancy and swimming characteristics do not change with depth. It has adjustable foot straps that easily allow it to adapt between warm and cold water diving, eliminating the need for multiple monofins for different conditions. It has a modular design that is lightweight and easily packed into standard luggage for traveling."</span></div>

The fin itself looks more like a dolphin's flukes, though, as opposed to a hydrofoil. Pricing for it starts at US$299, which doesn't include the required cycling shoes.</span></div>

That might seem plenty good enough given the average human eye is unable to differentiate between the individual pixels, but scientists in the UK have now developed technology that could lead to extremely high-resolution displays that put such pixel densities to shame.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Led by Oxford University scientists, a research team has created a prototype device that features pixels just 30 x 30 nanometers in size. The high resolution potential of the technology was discovered while the team was exploring the link between the electrical and optical properties of phase change materials (PCMs) that can switch from an amorphous to a crystalline state.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">By sandwiching a seven-nanometer thick layer of the PCM Germanium-Antimony-Tellurium (Ge2Sb2Te5 or GST) between two layers of transparent electrodes made of indium tin oxide (ITO), the scientists discovered they could "draw" still images within the sandwich "stack" using an atomic force microscope. They then found that the "nano-pixels" could be switched on and off electronically, creating colored dots that could be used as the basis for an extremely high-resolution display.</span></div>

We found that not only were we able to create images in the stack but, to our surprise, thinner layers of GST actually gave us better contrast. We also discovered that altering the size of the bottom electrode layer enabled us to change the color of the image."</span></div>

The fly-roof sits 600 mm (24 in) above the insulated roof, creating a pocket of warm air during the day. The cool air can then be drawn into the building through low windows around the courtyard.</span></div>

Each finger offers single and double-tap actions to control the phone's music. You can play, pause, skip forward, and backtrack through music; control volume; and activate Siri.</span></div>

This means the 18-inch panel can be rolled up into a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm (1.18 in) without the function of the 1,200 x 810 pixel display being affected.</span></div>

LG Display claims to have also reduced the haze of the panel, caused by circuit devices and film components, to just 2 percent.</span></div>

control unit. Instead users start by picking a "lead" foot (the one that
 goes in front), turning both skates on, then waiting for them to 
wirelessly sync up with one another. Once they're synced, the user 
accelerates by tilting the lead skate forward, and decelerates by 
putting their heel down. The motors of the non-lead skate simply copy 
whatever those in the lead one are doing.</span><br />

is reportedly good for 10 miles (16 km) or 90 minutes. For all models, a
 full charge of the lithium-ion batteries takes 1.5 hours.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">An MIT spin-off in Massachusetts, backed by the Gates Foundation, has developed a small, remote-controlled drug-dispensing implant that sits just under your skin. To activate the drug dispenser you simply press a button on a wireless remote control — and press it again to turn it off. Such an implant could be used to dispense a whole range of useful drugs — but in this case, one of the first commercial applications will be the contraceptive hormone <span style="color: black;">levonorgestrel, which is already used by a number of female birth control methods. A single implant can apparently provide enough levonorgestrel to be effective for 16 years; currently, no implanted contraceptive works for more than five years.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The implanted device, developed by the rather unimaginatively named Microchips in Lexington, is 20mm (0.8in) square and 7mm thick. Contained within the device is a microchip (thus the company’s amazing name) that contains a series of drug reservoirs. This is where the magic occurs: Each reservoir is gated by a special titanium and platinum seal that temporarily melts when an electric current is applied, allowing the drug to seep out. Apparently the reservoirs are large enough to carry a 16-year supply of the hormonal contraceptive <span style="color: black;">levonorgestrel. </span></span></div>

So, the implant would continue to provide birth control — until you press a button on a remote control, in which case it would be turned off, and you could then get pregnant again. Sadly, exact details on how the implant actually works — most notably the wireless connectivity and the magical melting/re-forming seal — are fairly hard to come by. But, considering it’s based on tech that MIT pioneered way back in the late ’90s, and now the involvement of the Gates Foundation, presumably it all works as advertised.</span></div>

Now, with the Gates Foundation getting involved, the new contraceptive version of the implant is being developed. The current plan is to begin testing in 2015 and have it on the market by 2018. (Remember, the Gates Foundation is all about improving the quality of life for people living in developing countries, and reliable contraception is key to such an endeavor. Last year we wrote a fantastic story about the Foundation funding the creation of an impenetrable graphene condom…)</span></div>

Rather than having to take a pill every day, or visit a doctor for an injection every few months, the implant just sits there, dutifully dispensing drugs for 16 years. If you decide it’s the right time to get pregnant, just push the button. There’s no mention of it on the Microchips website, but presumably a male version could also be developed (though male hormonal contraceptives aren’t quite as developed yet as their female counterparts).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">As with any medical implant, my mind readily races towards possible flaws and misuses of the Microchips technology. Obviously the wireless remote control is only useful if it remains in the hands of the woman with the implant. You also can’t rule out the possibility of outside actors remotely hacking the implant to turn it off — so the woman might think she’s protected, but isn’t. The possibilities get even scarier when you consider that these implants might eventually be used for other drugs, too. It was almost three years ago that we first discussed the lethal wireless insulin pump hack.</span></div>

see that the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 front panel is very durable, 
being made with sapphire crystal. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br />Previously, we heard that Apple would use sapphire crystal only for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6, but it looks like this isn’t true, and the 4.7-inch model will get the same treatment. <br /><br />As
 you’ll see below, the first video comes from MKBHD, and reportedly 
shows an iPhone 6 front panel that's been taken from Apple’s assembly 
line (so it’s not a dummy unit). The panel was tortured with a knife and
 some keys, and no scratches were found after that. The panel has also 
been bent, and it looks like it’s really flexible. The second video was 
posted by well-known Apple insider Sonny Dickson - who, in fact, seems 
to have provided the panel seen in MKBHD’s video, too.<br /> <br />Apple 
will probably announce the new iPhone 6 in September. What do you think,

Aquila electric surfboards promise high-speed cruising, carving and freestyling

 surfboards have been cropping up on a fairly regular basis since Gizmag
 first covered the PowerSki JetBoard
 a decade ago. Now, Spanish firm Aquila is planning to launch a new 
range of zippy electric-powered boards, each designed for different 
surfing styles.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Aquila is spin-off from Bizintek Innova, a product development and 
engineering company that specializes in electronics. It initially began 
as a project to develop an electric propulsion system for use in 
water-sports.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"We were training on low voltage power electronics, motor control and
 LiPo battery management systems to get the know-how needed to offer 
development services for electric vehicle customers," explains Aquia CEO
 Iñigo Sobradillo Benguría. "We searched for an application to test and 
thought that trying to get a board planing over the water would be a 
great challenge. When we tested the first prototypes on the beach, 
people were impressed and came to ask where could they get one. At that 
time we realized that there could be an opportunity for a product."</span><br />

recent years, the boards use a completely integrated electric-powered 
jet propulsion system and produce no noise or emissions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"It gets some water from the bottom part of the board and pressurizes
 it through the nozzle on the tail giving the board the thrust needed," 
explains Benguría. "Thrust is regulated through a wireless remote 
control and to turn it works like a surfboard. We have a high current 
Mosfet drive system with a microprocessor that controls the brushless 
motor and some other electronics for safe operation of the system."</span><br />

challenging part of the design. The Aquila team was unable to find a 
suitable and efficient solution on the market, so ended up designing its
 own. The result, he says, was a lightweight, high efficiency and 
completely integrated system.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The battery packs that are used to power the boards are replaceable, 
meaning that they can be swapped out and recharged while a fresh battery
 is swapped in to continue powering the board.</span><br />

board designs and seeking investors. The aim is to enter production in 
2015.</span><br />

 (91 x 39 in) and will retail for €2800 (US$3800).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Carver is designed for high-speed slaloming across the surface of
 the water. At 245 x 68 cm (98 x 27 in), it's the longest of the three 
boards and is aimed at giving the user control for turning. It has a top
 speed of 71 km/h (44 mph) and will cost €3300 ($4485).</span><br />

conscious that each person needs a different board," says Benguría. "We 
have developed a system that fits easily on different configurations and

 print your own house. Not with a regular 3D printer, but with a drone. 
 As we have already seen, the concept of 3D printed structural design is
 not a new one. But the massive 3D printers that are needed for large-scale construction projects are rather impractical.  Which is why <a href="http://sasajokic.com/" target="_blank" title="Sasa Jokic">Saša Jokić</a> and <a href="http://www.petrnovikov.com/" target="_blank" title="Petr Novikov">Petr Novikov</a> thought that adding drones into the mix will make a 3D printed construction project more achievable in much smaller spaces.</span><br />

 small sized drones made by Saša Jokić and Petr Novikov, are robotic 
concrete mixers, which can deposit layers of liquid construct 
substance. As with regular 3D printed products, there is a need for a 
core to construct the rest of the project around. This core consists of 
two large cylinders of liquid synthetic marble. The liquid is then 
forced through extended tubes by a specialized team of three robots, 
using inflatable syringes.  Next a sensor-equipped Minibuilder will 
follow lines that are marked on the ground, for the foundation of the 
construction. The Minibuilder positions the first 20 layers of construct
 material in a singular, looping spiral.</span><br />
