<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">"Because 3D printing resolutions are not currently low enough to print a structure which will actually filter blood, the file is of only the shell of the kidney," Coscia said. "Hollow fiber membranes will be installed on the inside to do the filtration function. The kidney will then be sealed together using the threads and sealing o-rings. A fluid called dialysate will be circulated on the outside of the membranes, inside of the shell, to remove waste material from the blood and keep useful material from leaving the blood. A waste stream maintains the person's ability to urinate. The outside of the shell can be used as a substrate for growth of biological material for ease of integration into the body."</span></div>

To lower costs and widen availability, a team of people from around the globe have teamed up to create 3D-printable prosthetics under the name “Robohand.” While the initial focus was on hands and fingers, the team has now set their sights on offering a 3D-printable leg at a fraction of the cost of traditional prosthetics. If the prototypes are successful, this low-cost solution could give thousands of amputees the ability to walk again.</span></div>

Since then, a 3D model of the finished version (right) has been released, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. There is still a lot of work to be done before it’s safe for humans to use, but the early results are promising. The fitting process still needs to be nailed down, and the assembled prosthetic needs to be thoroughly tested, but the finished product is well on its way to becoming a reality.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Keep in mind, the 3D printer is just being used here to make the plastic parts. The metal rods and pneumatic pumps are made separately through traditional methods. Still, you could theoretically be able to order everything from the internet, and make it yourself. Better yet, hospitals and charitable organizations will be able to make custom legs for amputees in need. That’s what really matters.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The final price range hasn’t been revealed yet, but rest assured that it will be a substantial savings over existing prosthetic legs. A fully assembled Robohand only costs about $500, but traditional prosthetics can cost tens of thousands of dollars. It’s safe to assume we’ll see a similar price gap with the RoboLeg.</span></div>

Up to four braille quick-dial buttons can also be set up, along with up to twelve buttons with either images or printed names.</span></div>

This story may turn out to be one that sticks out in my mind for quite a while. I’m not so far removed from my childhood that I can’t remember what excited me as a child. I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, and I also really got into the Transformer toys. There was just something about a normal-looking truck that turned into a fighter jet in a matter of seconds. As a kid, I had decided I’d probably never live to see the day someone would create a real-life Transformer. Boy was I ever wrong.</span></div>

Physicists have for long wondered about the possibilities of creating matter from light and this development brings us a lot closer.</div>

Even if this theory was universally accepted by physicists to be true, when Breit and Wheeler first proposed it, they said that they never expected it to be shown in the laboratory. The scientific evolution of today makes it easier to prove the theory now.</div>

The proposal is fairly simple in scientific terms. Professor Steve Rose and his Phd student Oliver Pike have designed the model on which the tests can be done. Their paper in <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Nature Photonics</em> proposes a two-step process. High intensity lasers would be used to push electrons until they are traveling close to the speed of light, directing them towards a slab of gold. The scientists then would fire a high-energy laser at the inner surface of this gold can called hohlraum, to create a thermal radiation field, generating light similar to the light emitted by stars.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The designer of the new device is 40-year-old engineer Adam Contoret.  He has spent two years at his garage in Stoke-on-Trent developing the water-resistant jet engine thrusters.  In a statement to the Daily Mail Online he said, ‘When I was about 14, a friend of the family bought us a model aircraft engine – and when my brother and I were testing it, we put it on a wooden board…That planted in my mind the idea of having some sort of stand propulsion for a board sport. Years went by and I did paragliding. I made this little bar with two engines and it worked…So, then I thought let’s make something that you can control the power on. It’s just me – I’m not some big company. I spoke with a patent attorney, and we put some drawings together…It’s still patent pending. I tried it on water quite a while ago using a small bar, but there wasn’t enough power. This is the first time it’s been done on a lake with an expert.’</span></div>

Currently, the developers are using several battery packs for the testing phase of the device.  The hand held engine is also quite heavy for users, but Dr Contoret noted that he expects technology to have improved so much in five years that the device will be approximately half the weight, but double the power.</span></div>
