The OwnFone is a simple, light and low-cost device that can be set up with braille quick-dial buttons. It is customized by the user before being 3D-printed by OwnFone.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Mobile phones obviously have the potential to be hugely beneficial for the blind and partially-sighted, but the visual nature of today's phone can largely or entirely preclude those with sight problems from using them. Similarly, braille is simply not an option where modern, touch-screen smartphones are concerned. Despite this, much of the advice for those with sight difficulties focuses around apps or accessibility settings that can improve standard devices.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The OwnFone takes a different approach, by stripping back the mobile phone to just its basic functionality and de-cluttering the fascia. The device is about the size of a credit card and saves only the user's most necessary contacts. It has a handful of buttons on its front, each pre-programmed with a direct action, such as increasing or decreasing the volume and switching the phone on or off. Up to four braille quick-dial buttons can also be set up, along with up to twelve buttons with either images or printed names.</span></div>

The quick-dial buttons are set up via the phone builder tool on the OwnFone website, with the user inputting the names and phone numbers of their required contacts (presumably with the aid of a sighted helper). A quick-dial button for the emergency services can be added too. A variety of design options are available for the OwnFone, which are also applied via the website.</span></div>

The use of 3D printing enables the company to minimize costs, as well as the lead-time between orders being placed and devices delivered. If a user wishes to change their quick-dial numbers, the device can be updated and reprinted for £10 (US$17).</span></div>

This story may turn out to be one that sticks out in my mind for quite a while. I’m not so far removed from my childhood that I can’t remember what excited me as a child. I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, and I also really got into the Transformer toys. There was just something about a normal-looking truck that turned into a fighter jet in a matter of seconds. As a kid, I had decided I’d probably never live to see the day someone would create a real-life Transformer. Boy was I ever wrong.</span></div>

Physicists at Imperial College London have created a new milestone for Human civilization. They have just proved that light can be molded into matter, something nobody before now thought was possible to recreate in the laboratory. Physicists have for long wondered about the possibilities of creating matter from light and this development brings us a lot closer.</div>

The experiment is yet to be done, but it has passed peer review as practical and the inventors are in discussions with experimentalists about the equipment to carry it out. These are exciting times because it has been accepted for 80 years that two photons of light could theoretically create matter, but there has never been demonstrable evidence yet.</div>

In 1934 Gregory Breit and John Wheeler proposed that, under the right circumstances, two photons of light would convert into an electron and the positron(the antimatter equivalent).</div>

Even if this theory was universally accepted by physicists to be true, when Breit and Wheeler first proposed it, they said that they never expected it to be shown in the laboratory. The scientific evolution of today makes it easier to prove the theory now.</div>

The proposal is fairly simple in scientific terms. Professor Steve Rose and his Phd student Oliver Pike have designed the model on which the tests can be done. Their paper in <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">Nature Photonics</em> proposes a two-step process. High intensity lasers would be used to push electrons until they are traveling close to the speed of light, directing them towards a slab of gold. The scientists then would fire a high-energy laser at the inner surface of this gold can called hohlraum, to create a thermal radiation field, generating light similar to the light emitted by stars.</div>

They would then direct the photon beam from the first stage of the experiment through the centre of the can, causing the photons from the two sources to collide and form electrons and positrons. It would then be possible to detect the formation of the electrons and positrons when they exited the can.</div>

For this, they would require a “Photon-photon collider”. This collider would convert light directly into matter using technology that is already available. Like the Large Hadron Collider, this will be a whole new type of high-energy physics experiment.</div>

Lead researcher Oliver Pike said that although the theory is conceptually simple, it will be very difficult to verify experimentally. <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The designer of the new device is 40-year-old engineer Adam Contoret.  He has spent two years at his garage in Stoke-on-Trent developing the water-resistant jet engine thrusters.  In a statement to the Daily Mail Online he said, ‘When I was about 14, a friend of the family bought us a model aircraft engine – and when my brother and I were testing it, we put it on a wooden board…That planted in my mind the idea of having some sort of stand propulsion for a board sport. Years went by and I did paragliding. I made this little bar with two engines and it worked…So, then I thought let’s make something that you can control the power on. It’s just me – I’m not some big company. I spoke with a patent attorney, and we put some drawings together…It’s still patent pending. I tried it on water quite a while ago using a small bar, but there wasn’t enough power. This is the first time it’s been done on a lake with an expert.’</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Dr Contoret, is the founder and director of engineering firm Dreamscience.  He said his technology is still in the early stages, because the device only lasts for ten minutes before the batteries fail to provide enough power for it to continue. Currently, the developers are using several battery packs for the testing phase of the device.  The hand held engine is also quite heavy for users, but Dr Contoret noted that he expects technology to have improved so much in five years that the device will be approximately half the weight, but double the power.</span></div>

Over 1,400 backers committed over $400,000 to the crowdfunding campaign that had an original goal of just $9,000. The Little Rock, Arkansas-based company has been scrambling to fulfill all those orders ever since, but has managed to also bring forth a few new versions of its 3D printer kit and also prepare to start taking new orders.</div>

I stopped by the QU-BD (an acronym for Quintessential Universal Building Device) booth at the Bay Area Maker Faire in California this past weekend and navigated the throng of 3D printing fanatics gathered around a new batch of models from QU-BD offered in bright neon colors.</div>

A company rep told me that they are still working through getting printers to all the Kickstarter backers, but were also taking new orders and hope to be able to start delivering those orders next month.</div>

That's a pretty big transition for a tiny family operation to make in a short amount of time. The overwhelming success of the crowdfunding campaign wrapped up just about six months ago, and now QU-BD is already moving from fulfilling that initial wave of orders that was 50 times larger than expected, to fulfilling new orders and taking up standard operations as a manufacturer of a low-cost, ready-to-assemble home 3D printer.<img alt="Assorted QU-BD printers on display at Maker Faire" src="http://images.gizmag.com/gallery_lrg/oneup2-2.JPG" /></div>

The company says that one of the keys to keeping the price down and to moving so many 3D printers out the door is the fact that they come unassembled. There are also plenty of options for modifying the basic unit, including a heated bed, increased production area and adding those pretty bright colors to the frame itself.</div>

It might very well be only a rumor, but where there is smoke, there’s fire; and what we’re hearing is that the next version of Windows, Windows 9, is already in the works. That’s only logical, as it does take Microsoft a while to get their things together, in spite of erstwhile Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saying that rapid deployment of their products is integral to their success.</div>

So, while the company is still “forcing” people to update to Windows 8.1, even <a href="http://news.filehippo.com/2014/05/microsoft-backtracks-pushes-back-windows-8-1-update-deadline/" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">pushing back the initial deadline it set for updating</a>, rumors about Windows 9 are already starting to make the rounds.</div>

If you’re thinking that image says 02-03 and not Q2-Q3, you can be forgiven. That was my initial reaction as well, but the Windows 9 leaker has <a href="https://twitter.com/FaiKeeF/status/467429503929556994" style="color: #0092dd;" target="_blank">tweeted</a> to clarify, saying:</div>

While skepticism surely is understandable, FaiKee has been known to leak such announcements way before Microsoft releases the official word. Perhaps this time, FaiKee is right once again. Although, whether it’s 02-03 or Q2-Q3, there’s still quite a long wait for Windows 9, to be sure. There are many other analysts and speculators who have made their own predictions as to when the next version of the operating system will be released, and they vary. The only common thing: it will be in 2015.</div>
